Northern
Chile's monumental landscape is represented by
the Atacama Desert, a beautiful coastline of lonely
beaches and the Altiplano, habitat of an indigenous
population of ancestral cultures.
Between
the coastal mountain range and the Andes Mountains,
is the Atacama Desert, the driest on the planet.
Its geography is unique and includes lagoons,
volcanos, salt flats, geysers, hot springs, rivers
and ravines, together with a widespread Spanish
legacy of XVI century churches and saltpeter deposits.
The Aymard Indians, are the descendants of America's
original culture. To the west, 1,240 miles of
coastline face the Pacific Ocean. Here we find
the cities most visited by tourists in the north:
Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta. Tourism covers
the coast, the coastal mountain range and its
beautiful national parks, and the magical town
of San Pedro de Atacama, located in an oasis,
north of the Atacama salt flats, and high on the
list of to see by international travelers.
